ANN #14: Anti-Abortion Does Not Equal Pro-Life

[chuck]Today we discuss the murder of pro-choice doctor George Tiller, who was harassed (read: shot twice, bombed, and vandalized) for the past twenty years because he was willing to help women whose lives were threatened because of their pregnancies. It is amazing to me that some people, who purport to be so concerned about the sanctity of life, are also so quick to snuff it out. The ultimate irony is, of course, that Dr. Tiller was gunned down in a “house of God.”

We also discuss Kent Hovind’s grounds for appeal to the Supreme Court, as well as some surprise news from Texas. Get your weekly ANN fix right here.

Also, I’ve decided to add some ANNs to the podcast feed in iTunes. New episodes will be added as they come out, and old ones when I am able. If anyone has any feedback on this, pro or con, let me know.

#21: Nick Fiedler, Hopeful Skeptic

[chuck]In this interesting conversation, we discuss the concept of “hopeful skepticism” with Nick Fiedler of the Nick and Josh Podcast, who coined the term. We also range across faith, belief, rationality, and the craziness of Mormonism.

Every time I talk to rational believers, I get just a little more hopeful about the future of our species. Fortunately I have found the cure for that hope: creationist tripe.

ANN Lucky #13: God and Country

[chuck]For the thirteenth episode of our wildly popular ANN, we discuss this article from the Boston Globe about the ultra-religious war briefings given to President Bush, which were brimming with not-so-subtle Christian propaganda and images. If not for the frightening nature of the quoted scriptures and blatantly jingoistic captions, I’m not sure this would even qualify as news, because given Bush’s tenure, this development is entirely unsurprising. Somehow I think President Obama’s current war briefings are just a little different.

Interview with Adele Sakler

[chuck]We’ve been holding this one in the wings for awhile, and now is a great time to use it! In our twentieth podcast, I talk to Adele Sakler, one of our favorite interviewees, about a wide range of interesting topics. Leighton talks mostly about his brothers.

It’s all right here.

Guest Podcast!

[chuck]Remember waaaaay back when we talked about having our April guests on the show? Well even though it’s May, they’re here!

I think this is our best podcast to date. Pete Rollins is a fascinating fellow and Adele Sakler as always provides a unique perspective on everything we discuss. And since I’m a genius, the odd man out was Leighton, who really didn’t contribute at all. But that’s pretty much par for the course. Give it a listen!

ANN #9: Satan, Utah County, and the Rise of Unbelief

[chuck]Look ma, it’s on time this week! In ANN Episode #9 we address an amazing piece of legislation in Utah County (home of BYU) entitled, “Resolution opposing the Hate America anti-Christian Open Borders cabal.” It got rejected, by Utah Republicans, but not because it was batshit insane. No, they had more pragmatic reasons.

We also revisit the rise of unbelief by discussing an article in the NY Times called, “More Atheists Shout It From the Rooftops.”

And also, here’s episode #8, which we recorded and edited, but apparently forgot about. We discuss same sex marriage in Vermont and Mormon priesthood blessings. I’m sure Leighton is somehow at fault.
