Posting Here vs Facebook

I would like your feedback on a question that’s been nagging at me for the last few days: the utility of this, the main Irreligiosophy site. When we started in 2009, this was the only place a person could comment apart from iTunes reviews, and we got to a point where the discussion was pretty lively (anyone remember the forums?). Now that the (vast?) majority of that conversation has moved over to the Facebook group, is there any reason to continue updating this site? Or should I just freeze it as it is, stop updating the site with every podcast, and just place a final link that points over to where most of the action is?

  1. freeze the site but update youtube frequently.

  2. Citizen Wolf says:

I don’t use Facebook at all. Far too noisy and cluttered. I prefer it here. Just my 2 cents.

  3. Citizen Wolf says:

I just visited the FB page….

    …by Odin’s beard, NOOOOOOOOOO……..

  4. i hardly ever use facebook either, but i also use the rss feed for the podcast app on my phone

  5. I don’t have a Facebook account and it says I need one to see the Facebook page. So I can’t go there, but it doesn’t really matter to me. I don’t have to post, just so long as I can keep downloading the podcast.

  6. I believe you have to be a member of the Facebook group to comment. People can also be banned from the group… Does this have something to do with your recent discussion with thundergoose?

Personally, I don’t trust Facebook but whatever… it’s your site.

  7. I rarely see Irreligiosophy posts on the FB wall and if I don’t see posts, I rarely have the brain to go seek a person’s or group’s wall to catch up, so I guess for me, this is still a valued venue.

That said, despite your long string of excellent podcasts (you guys have been really knocking ’em out of the park for a long time, now), I haven’t been participating post-wise or financially.

    Hope to change that soon.

Like I said, you guys have been on fire.

  8. For what it’s worth, 1) I don’t run the Facebook site so I’m not in charge of banning over there, 2) People can be banned here too, and 3) As far as I can tell, no one has been banned from either site with the exception of spam advertisers on the Facebook group. I don’t foresee that changing in the future.

Nothing to do with thundergoose or our conversation, which though admittedly heated and fairly time-consuming, I think has helped me see things from a different perspective and so has been worth the effort. This is more that I feel like I’m duplicating my efforts here with diminishing return as the conversation moves more and more to Facebook.

  9. Thanks, Jack!

  10. There is the issue of Facebook filtering feeds. That’s not a big problem. Since I don’t do iTunes, I need the RSS feed.

  11. I only know of new episodes because of the rss-update wordpress sends out. I don’t participate in discussio, so I wouldn’t care as long as there is still an RSS Feed.

  12. The RSS feed wouldn’t change, since I have to keep updating that to signal to iTunes there is a new episode. The site itself wouldn’t go anywhere, I’d just stop updating it with new posts every time a new episode is released.

Which, frankly, isn’t frequent enough that the extra 10 or so minutes it takes to write up a post here should really bother me, but you know. It is 10 minutes.

  13. I listen to the show from the website, as I do the other podcasts I enjoy, rarely see the Facebook feed, and hate iTunes with the passion of a thousand flaming suns. I would be most disappointed if this site went away, but am willing to admit it’s a selfish desire.

As a podcaster myself, and a lazy one at that, I can relate to your point that updating multiple places, though not horribly time consuming, is extra work that may be unappreciated or unnecessary to the majority.

  14. I get the podcast from iTunes. I don’t use FB- my hatred for it is infinite and all powerful.

As long as it’s in iTunes or another feed I can sub to or you just point the way to the Youtube channel, it makes sense to freeze this one.

  15. i like having the site as my hub. tho’ i rarely comment i do check here frequently. i don’t have/want facebook or itunes. so long as i can still access the shows i’ll be mostly happy and appreciate that you’re a busy man with other things to do beside updating the site.

  16. I don’t do iTunes… and i rarely hit the facebook group. I would rather come here to get the podcast.

  17. I don’t use facebook or itunes. i rarely comment on the show but i do like reading stuff in the comment box by degenerate pinko atheists. this website us how i get to you.

  18. I’m with Citizen Wolf & those above who rarely visit FB.

I have you in my RSS feedreader, so get all postings & mp3 downloads via that.

  19. You could setup something on IFTTT to autopost the new episodes on the blog from the RSS feed.

  20. I don’t do Itunes and I only get the mp3 download from this site. Facebook is cool with me as long as I don’t have to get the download from itunes or rss. Thanks.

  21. I’m not much of a commenter, anymore, on anything. That said, I hate Facebook and I don’t use iTunes. I get the updates via email.

  22. Honestly I find myself wanting to participate less and less in atheist conversations because of the way the community is behaving and the facebook group has been a lot worse about those kind of things than this site. That said posting stuff on the site isn’t going to make a huge difference, I’ve already disengaged. That was a bit of a downer post, sorry, still loving the podcast.

  23. I hate Facebook.

  24. I have only ever come to the site to hear the shows. I would prefer to be able to continue to have access from here.

  25. Citizen Wolf says:

    @Tort

It’s the loud vocal u-tube hive-mind types that drown out the more considered members of the community.

I agree with you, some of those brash obnoxious types can dent your enthusiasm for wanting to go anywhere near a comment page.

Try thinking Think happy puppies and fluffy white clouds against an azure sky and bunnies jumping and skipping on an open meadow with dandelions and daisies.

Not sure if that’ll encourage you to ever show your face above the parapet again though……

    By Thor, now I’m on a downer…. 🙁

  26. This is the site I download the podcast from. Will the link to the new episode still be posted here?? I have no account with iTunes and have a prejudice against the i world. Would the link be on the Facebook page? I am not on that either. Isn’t there a certain amount of privacy that is maintained by using this page rather than the commercial ones? I do not know either way just asking.

  27. I would much rather come here then go to Facebutt.

Either way as long as I can still get the podcast, I’m happy.

  28. I only every look for updates here.

  29. As long as I can find a non-itunes RSS feed I’ll be happy. Didn’t know about the FB page. Don’t much like FB.

    PS. Currently using http://www.irreligiosophy.com?feed=rss2

  30. Keep the site. I really dislike facebook and only use it to keep up with friends are relatives. Keep a real site please.

  31. Facebook is a wasteland.

  32. As one of the very few people under 50 without a Facebook account, I very much appreciate this site. Now, more episodes, please.

  33. Lucy Harris says:

this thread is making baby facebook jesus cry.

  34. I only see the new podcast post from this site as I don’t use facebook nor iTunes.

  35. Cunningham! says:

I prefer this site over the FB group, but I visit both.

  36. All right, as long as the comments section on this site remains active, I’ll keep maintaining it. If I see tumbleweeds … adios!

  37. tubmleweeds says:

    Hello?

  38. Adios fuckers!

  39. I never, ever ever use FB. Ever.

  40. Perhaps if you moved the site to the South you wouldn’t see tumbleweeds–just tumbling beer cans wrapped in Confederate flags.

  41. I’d like podcast announcements to stay on the site. I love the podcast, but I’d like my facebook to be as religious-discussion free as possible. Gloryhole! 😀

  42. Leigh-Anne says:

Personally, I’d prefer the shift to facebook. It’s just more convenient, especially in terms of notifications. : )

  43. thundergoose says:

    Citizen Wolf,

I wanted to respond to your question to me on the “feminatheism” forum, but it looks like it’s closed. There’s no option for me to leave a comment. I have quite a long answer so I’m not sure where to leave it, since it would be very out of place in this comment thread. If you want, feel free to email me at thundergoose@excite.com and I’ll give you my take on it. Thanks! Sorry about the off-topic comment everybody.

  44. Thundergoose, it looks like our WordPress setup automatically closed comments on posts that were older than 31 days. I set that to 120 days, so you should be able to post in the proper thread now.

  45. Whats a facebook?
Note: I spell irreligiosophy correctly 30% of the time. It’s much more fun than just bookmarking.

  46. I don’t use Facebook, and I get the podcasts from iTunes. I only come to the site to look at Matt’s picture.

  47. Please keep the site. I don’t use Facebook or iTunes or any of that other fancy stuff. I just use this site. And while I might not give a lot of feedback… like this is the first time I have done so, I find the discussion here interesting to read.

  48. Gary Salsberry says:

Just started listening to your podcast and ran into your question about using Facebook only. I also do not use Facebook so I hope you keep up your site. More important, keep podcasting.

  49. How old are these people posting? They sound like my grandparents. And I sum like your RSS feed for my podcast software. So you are fucked chuck, since you always do what your fans ask here…. Lol

  50. I still like your… Not I sum like your. Fucking swipe….
