[chuck]I have been flooded with requests to re-enable the donate button to allow people to send the site some money. I feel bad about that, I didn’t mean to turn the end of Irreligiosophy into some sort of cash drive. But I also have to say that I’m touched. I honestly had no idea how much this podcast meant to some of you until I got hammered by all the emails and comments over the last two days.

So I’m going to acquiesce and put a donate button back on the site for the time being. But I’m also going to do something for you all. There is one episode of Irreligiosophy left, an interview we did back in February with Dan Barker of the Freedom from Religion Foundation. I don’t think it’s one of our best interviews (which means it may well be one of our worst shows), but hey, it’s done and just needs to be edited. So I’ll break out the audio program one last time.

Seriously, all of you. Thanks.

  1. Jesus Sparky, what the hell. This comment thread has been flushed down the toilet. However, it’s pretty cool you shared your girlfriend. Most people are so insecure they get jealous.

  2. Oh, sorry guys. I guess I got a little carried away. It was late. I was alone. And I’ve been under a lot of stress lately. Kids, Job, and I run a side business too, and it’s failing… I guess my emotions took control and I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t mean to offend.

Leighton, I know you’re out there. We love you too man. Please come back to us somehow. Charlie has that mountain of education, the mental discipline of years of logical arguments, the necessity of checking his emotions in his professional career (bedside manor). It’s natural for him to shine a little brighter.

But you Leighton, You were the real deal. Unpolished, raw, honest and not afraid to say what you thought. Your lack of candor was half the reason we all listened. We cringed, we were often embarrassed for you, but we cared and we respected you for putting yourself out there without any reservations, without any shame, without any shield. You’re my hero man. Charlie may be more educated and practiced, but you’re just as smart. Remember, it takes one to know one, and it’s the less educated crowd that doesn’t “get” your insights. But I do, and I’m sure Charlie gets it too — why else would he have been your close friend for so long? And if he won’t admit it, that’s his failing, not yours. Come back to us brother!

Chuck, You’re a doctor, dammit. Fix it man, fix it!

  3. Yeah, when I think “lack of candor” I think of Leighton. And of getting myself a dictionary.

  4. Did anyone else ever notice Leighton had an interesting way of mispronouncing words that was really amusing? I kept noticing it so much I thought it might be like a dyslexia thing, where his mind mixed up sounds. I liked it though and didn’t think it took anything away from the podcast. One of my favorite episodes was when they interviewed his brother.

Folks here have a lot more forgiveness in their hearts than I do. If someone screwed me and my family over, why the flip should I give two deuces about making reparations. I say, “Pay up or shut up, and MAYBE then we can talk,” not “Thanks, may I have another.”

  6. This sucks. I hate it when my favorite podcasts podfade. Leighton might be a dick but he is a likeable dick to us on the other end of the microphone, and he always seemed to bring out the worst (in a good way) of Chuck. I always love the sophomoric dynamic between the two. Chuck of course is the shit, and i will miss the podcast. I hope to catch Chuck as a guest on other podcasts from time to time.

Say, what about teaming up with Rich Orman over on Dogma Free America. He enjoys taking the piss out of religious lunacy too. It could be like a superhero team-up. Kinda like Spiderman & Batman. Rich rotates through regular co-presenters and maybe he’d welcome an occassional appearence by Chuck. If anyone’s a contributor to the DFA forums perhaps they could suggest it to Rich?

btw, yes I know it’s never as simple as that, and I know there are multiple practical issues to consider, I’m just shooting out some ideas.

I’m with Rnegade87. Whatever is between C and L is between them and for them to sort out or not. I loved the Podcast and C and L’s on-air personalities. I dunno or care what they are like off air. It seems up to the hosts to bash each other or not.

Most of the other atheist casts out there are dreary snoozefests hosted by button-eyed ideologues and mouth-breathing dullards compared to Irreligiosophy.

    These are sad times.

  9. Actually, the person who screwed Chucks family over was Chuck himself.

  10. Citizen Wolf says:

@ptah. Do you have insider information?

  11. I think he means that “if” there was debt incurred by Charlie he signed for it and by doing so he’s responsible.

I would disagree to some extent though. Charlie might have messed up financially, but there was something he liked and he took a shot. Most people don’t ever have the balls to do that and really, life isn’t all about money. It wasn’t wise to mix money and a friendship, especially knowing the kind of history Leighton has had. I mean, hes had a rough life and Charlie knows all this. So for Charlie shouldn’t be totally surprised by the end result.

But hey, he took a shot, he’s got an amazing talent for broadcasting, he’s enriched my life (and so has Leighton), and I’m appreciative and quite frankly I admire the risk they took. Wish it would have worked out, since it sunk my favorite podcast, but I’m not perfect and I don’t expect anyone else to be, nor do I hold other people to some standard I’ve never been able to meet myself in my life.

So whatever, I just want more people to donate, and everyone to be happy again.

  12. I have not written before but I want to put my two cents in (figuratively) while I still can. I will miss you podcasts, I went to sleep catching up on all of them and then playing again when I woke, not a bad thing, I really just could not stop listening. I even was about to write with some great suggestions for future podcasts – current philosophical ideas such as that of Derek Parfit, the oh so current poem of Lucretius On the Nature of Things, The Children of God (whom I traveled with as a secret skeptic), etc. As a former Mormon, daughter of an ex-communicated father, and now for many decades an atheist, I truly enjoyed your careful thought process and the added info that you provided me. Hope you consider doing the casts again and maybe finding a new partner. sorry for the loss of your friendship with Leighton.
    sincerely,
    Diana

  13. Leighton (wherever you are):

Stand up in a clear blue morning
Until you see what can be
Alone in a cold day dawning
    Are you still free?
    Can you be?

When some cold tomorrow finds you
When some sad old dream reminds you
How the endless road unwinds you
While you see a chance take it
    Find romance, fake it
    Because it’s all on you

    Don’t you know by now
    No one gives you anything
Don’t you wonder how you keep on moving
    One more day
    Your way
    Ooooooooh, your way

When there’s no one left to leave you
Even you don’t quite believe you
That’s when nothing can deceive you
While you see a chance take it
    Find romance, fake it
    Because it’s all on you

  14. Herb (12th Apostle) says:

@Ptah: There is no shame in trusting a friend. There is a lot of risk; but no shame. You’re just being your typical boorish self, Richard.

  15. The truth hurts, beetle.

  16. Citizen Wolf: no, I don’t. I just have more business sense than Chuck. But then again, an asparagus has that.

  17. Citizen Wolf says:

    @ptah
Jeez, that’s harsh. If you happen to know Chuck personally then maybe it’s true (but still harsh), but if you don’t know the particular circumstances of the situation then it’s just trolling.

  18. Herb (12th Apostle) says:

@Ptah. Truth? Your remark was at the very least your opinion, and at best your assessment (emphasis on “ass”). But the truth? For someone trolling an atheist site you sure do seem to have a god-complex.

  19. I’ve been listening to you since the end of 2009 and therefore felt I had to at least say thank you to both you and L. for all of your work. I couldn’t stand your humor at first and had to trudge through it because of all the great stuff you covered. But alas, I came to love the chemistry between you and L., and that chemistry made your podcast truly unique and great. I hope the two of you will be able to overcome your issues and we will hear from irreligiosophy again. Fuck you both!

  20. AtheistMama says:

Thank you so much for everything that you (and Leighton) have done for me. You were the first atheist podcast I ever listened to and remain one of my favorites. As an ex-mormon, I found your perspective very relevant to my life and to my deconversion. I do hope you guys will come back someday. You have a huge fan base waiting and ready.

  21. hey mate, fuck the podcast, I am sorry you have personal problems.

take care, you are smart guy

  22. Donated. Should get a few fucking beers out of that one…;0)

BTW, Chuck, you should guest on (or at least listen to) the Cognitive Dissonance podcast… it’s very much in the spirit of The one True Podcast™, but with added Pinko Liberal Commentary® thrown in for good measure…

    Take care, mate.
