32: Archaeology and the Exodus

[irrelig]Those of you who’ve been listening for a while might remember when we discussed the plagues of the Exodus waaaaay back in podcast #2. Today we take on the archaeological evidence for the Exodus account found in the Bible that has been unearthed after 100 years of searching. SPOILER ALERT: There is none.

Was it worth the wait? Only one way to find out.

ANN 24: Sweden, Switzerland, and Texas

[ann]Well, this week we discuss a little village in Switzerland that made a vow 300 years ago to live virtuous lives so that God would make the nearby glacier recede. When God finally gets off his ass, he really gets the job done! We also talk about Texas’s most recent inanity, making a Bible course mandatory for all public school students. Because in the competitive job market out there, what’s really going to help you land that lucrative position is a thoroughgoing exegesis of 2 Kings 2:23 and 24.

Also, we learn that I desperately need a geography lesson.

31: Favorite Jack Chick Tracts

[irrelig]After a long wait due entirely to Leighton’s laziness, we release our latest podcast episode, a treatise exploring with great sobriety our 3 favorite Chick tracts. The first is called “The Visitors,” about some unfortunate Mormon missionaries who meet their match in a True Christian little girl. The second is the story of an aborted fetus named Clarice, although why you would name a fetus whose ears are destined to be sold on the black market, I’ll never know. The last and final tract is called “Boo!” and it’s the glorious True Story of Lucifer’s birthday, Halloween, filled with “documented facts.”

28: Ewa Wasilewska, Anthropologenius

[irrelig]Podcast #28 has us discussing a wide variety of topics with anthropology guru and University of Utah professor Ewa Wasilewska. We cover some topics we’ve touched on in previous podcasts, such as the Enuma Elish and the Epic of Gilgamesh, and some things we haven’t — Leighton and I even learn some new stuff about Adam and Eve, as well as that wily serpent. We also discover a seething hatred Professor Wasilewska holds for all things Greek and Roman. Good times!

22: Did Jesus Exist?

[chuck]In this episode, Leighton and I comb over the evidence for the existence of a historical Jesus (which is actually pretty small) with two pairs of skeptical eyes. We discuss the pagan sources of Pliny the Younger, Tacitus, and the possible reference in Suetonius and then move on to Josephus and the documents in the New Testament. It’s a wild ride through first- and second-century Judaism, Christianity, and the Roman Empire.

You can download it through iTunes or directly here. For my part in this conversation, I relied heavily on Bart Ehrman’s discussions in Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet of the New Millennium, Misquoting Jesus, and Jesus, Interrupted as well as these three sites on the Josephus question.

Pardon my hacking, one of my patients gave me a nasty virus, which I hope to have passed on to Leighton.

Guest Podcast!

[chuck]Remember waaaaay back when we talked about having our April guests on the show? Well even though it’s May, they’re here!

I think this is our best podcast to date. Pete Rollins is a fascinating fellow and Adele Sakler as always provides a unique perspective on everything we discuss. And since I’m a genius, the odd man out was Leighton, who really didn’t contribute at all. But that’s pretty much par for the course. Give it a listen!
