[chuck]Hopefully this one has a little more merit than the PodCastAwards. I got this email in my inbox today:
I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that you’ve received nominations for Best Podcast in the 2011 About.com Readers’ Choice Awards. You’re in the top 10 nominations, in fact, but only the top 5 will move on for the final vote.
I thought you might want to know in case you wanted to encourage your readers and listeners who haven’t acted yet to place nominations before the nomination time ends on Friday.

I suppose you can all head over there and nominate us in a futile attempt to get us into the top 5 only to have our hopes and dreams crushed by Skeptical Guide to the Universe Reasonable Doubts. Alternatively, if you’re anything like Leighton or myself, you’ll shrug your shoulders and continue doing whatever it was you were doing.

You think I’m going to vote for you fuckers? Suck my dick!
I was going to vote for you guys, but I couldn’t find the “Most Irrational Email Exchange Between a Believer and an Atheist” box.
Wtf is the Skeptical Guide to the Universe? Also, good luck with the nomination.
SGU isn’t really atheistic, so I think Chuck has been chugging Everclear again.
where is my podcast???
Yeah, SGU generally avoid purely religious topics, by design. Most on the show are non-believers, but they usually only talk about religion when it intersects with other skeptical issues
It’s Skeptics Guide to the Universe. Not “Skeptical Guide.” Jesus Christ!
But I agree, totally different category. Steven Novella doesn’t really like to ever talk about religion unless it crosses into the realm of science like when the DNA evidence blew up the BoM narrative or when talking about Scientology’s bias against psychology and psychiatry.
It’s a science and skepticism podcast, not atheist/religion.
I forgot how to spell Irreligosophy so I couldn’t vote.
FINE changed to RD because apparently the SGU folk are pansies about religion.
I voted for “Fuck you fans”….. wait thats not the name of your podcast…. meh

I disagree. They are smug, self-congratulatory, arrogant, narrow-minded, ignorant about everything except their little specialty, pansies about religion.
“I disagree. They are smug, self-congratulatory, arrogant, narrow-minded, ignorant about everything except their little specialty, pansies about religion.”
And you apparently are a credulous homeopathy/anti-vaxx/spychic-lovin/science-hatin’ douchebag.
Vote? Maybe… I’ll need another podcast before Friday to help me decide. I don’t feel bad asking for more anyway because I know you don’t write anything yourselves. That’s what Inchol is for. All you have to do is crack that whip… hold some cheesecake on a stick in front of his face but not let him have any. That sort of thing.
SGU is a GREAT podcast, though not nearly as drop-dead funny as Irreligiosophy. They don’t like to take religion head-on, and I think that’s okay. While I think that an ultimate result of applied skepticism is atheism, it’s okay that others haven’t reached that conclusion yet. Skepticism leads there eventually. They’re NOT religion-friendly whatsoever. I think they’re all atheists, except that Dr. Novella claims to be agnostic. There are “skeptics” that are still theists, and it’s good for them to have skeptical exposure; they might become atheists eventually. Science is the focus on that podcast. Not history, not philosophy, not culture or theology. Sometimes it comes up, but not often. They still have a mass of material with which to work and produce hours upon hours of information. That’s their specialty, so more power to them. Atheism as a topic is broad, branching everywhere. To really cover atheism well, you need dedicated atheists who promote skeptical methodology — such as Chuck and Leighton.

Naw, I’m a lover not a fighter. I just get sick of the “i’m a famous celebrity” attitude by those SGU people. They are just a little too full of themselves. And they are not funny. When Leighton gets invited to speak at one of those conferences they’re always throwing, then maybe I’ll lighten up on them.
P.S. I’ve always wondered: What the hell is a douchebag? And can’t we come up with some more creative name calling?
I’ll vote for you if you promise the most fucked up acceptance speech in the history of self-congratulatory award ceremonies. I mean fucked up to the point of being banned from ever being nominated again. Scorched earth, no survivors, having them cut off your audio feed would be a fitting tribute to the One True Podcast. Yeah. I’m going to vote now.
Evolve1, isn’t that our general motivation for everything? Get me an audio feed and Lucifer himself will cringe.
I’d vote for you, but I’m not seeing a new podcast so, fuck it.
@Chuck- “FINE changed to RD because apparently the SGU folk are pansies about religion.”
They are pansies (though I would have used another word starting with P) when dealing with religion and the SGU forum is even worse. Bunch of so-called skeptics tip-toeing around the theist skeptics [sic] anyway you gots ma vote!
‘theist skeptics?’ those two words should never be used next to each other.
” I am skeptical of things, except those things that I hold to be true regardless of evidence”
yes, wonderful. I’ve never really listened to those other podcasts much, and now I will make a point to listen to them even less.
btw, where is my fuckin podcast?
Say what you want about SGU, but unlike (ahem) some other podcasts, they manage to put out a well-produced podcast on time every week.
I think that the SGU does just fine on religion, considering that it’s not their niche: they talk much more about science, technology, and the paranormal. Whenever someone makes a falsifiable claim that can be addressed by evidence, they take a look. Whenever someone makes an unfalsifiable claim, they say so and move on. I think that Rebecca and Jay are just as outspoken in their atheism as Chuck and Leighton, but it isn’t the focus of the show. They’re certainly not on the Chris Mooney side of things, anyway.
Also: Where’s my podcast?
I voted for the Wiglian Way or whatever the fuck that podcast was.
I voted for them in the Manga category Best New Boys Love / Yaoi Manga.
Chuck, if you have a piece of meat and leave it in the sun, doesn’t it bring about an increase of incredible complexity and disorder? After all viral, bacterial, fungal and larval life take hold and grow within it. So what if a piece of meat decays. The upshot is millions of complex organisms while bacteria are sharing plasmids and evolving.
The meat is the water. The abundant life is the oil if we look at decreased entropy. Would this be and argument opposing the E4F “meat in the sun” position?
I was in QED this weekend and I heard Steve Novella’s speech. It was about all the ways the brain is fooled to see things that are not there, and it was extremely interesting and subtle. As in, something to show your non-skeptical friends and let it stay in the back of their minds until they are ready to question everything. An approach like this is still useful, as just presenting facts about how the brain works can be extremely effective with people who don’t have much truck with science in their everyday lives.
Also, I have a photo of me with Eugenie Scott standing next to a Dalek, after we overdosed on homeopathic belladonna pills. Good times 🙂
I messed up the html. Here is the link to QED

this is lame some other podcast is winning by a 70% margin. That screams fixed poll to me.
“P.S. I’ve always wondered: What the hell is a douchebag? And can’t we come up with some more creative name calling?”
“A douche is a device used to introduce a stream of water into the body for medical or hygienic reasons, or the stream of water itself. Douche usually refers to vaginal irrigation, the rinsing of the vagina, but it can also refer to the rinsing of any body cavity. A douche bag is a piece of equipment for douching—a bag for holding the fluid used in douching. To avoid transferring intestinal bacteria into the vagina, the same bag must not be used for an enema and a vaginal douche.” – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douche
Sounds pretty creative to me.
