[chuck]So I get frequent emails about when Unapologetics is going to make an appearance, questions about why it’s taking so long, and general exasperation over the wait. I take it as a sort of back-handed compliment — hey the good news is that there’s an eager, vocal listening base built-in — but I did want to update you on where things stood and why it has taken this long so far.

Research for the first episode (on the empty tomb) is complete, all I need to do is nail down some format issues and record the thing. Research on the second episode (the art of argumentation) is just about done, most of it done by a listener who did all the groundwork and found some great examples of fallacies for me. I’d like to have 4 or 5 episodes in the can before I begin, but for once the research time isn’t the issue.

The issue is time, period. I’ve been working overtime for the past nine months to pay down the debts incurred by the haunt. Right now I’m nearing the end of a particularly grueling stretch of five 12 hour shifts in five days. Here’s my schedule for the first half of August:

8/1: 8am-8pm
8/2: 7am-7pm
8/3: 7am-7pm
8/4: 8am-8pm
8/5: 8am-8pm
8/6: 8am-5pm
8/7: 8am-5pm
8/8: 7am-7pm
8/9: 8am-8pm
8/10: 7am-7pm
8/11: 8am-8pm
8/12: 8am-8pm
8/13: OFF
8/14: 8am-8pm
8/15: 8am-8pm

So that’s 162 hours over a 15 day period (feels like I’m in residency again!). Now as I said, this is a particularly bad stretch but it’s not unrepresentative, on average, of the last nine months. This leaves very little time for sleep, let alone family or waaaaaaay down the list, the new podcast. The good news is that as I mentioned, my main clinic is under new management, which supposedly means a higher rate of pay (I’ll believe it when I see it) which will translate into fewer hours required, which means more time for family and eventually the ability to devote more time to the podcast.

First, though, I think I’m going to take a vacation — say, around the last week of October — both to recharge my batteries and celebrate a bit that I’ve survived the year from hell.

  1. Chuck that’s a horrid looking timetable! christ. Hope you enjoy your vacation (you’ve certainly earned it). I consider myself part of the eager fan base you mention, but whenever you get to it is fine. We must be patient for the second coming of Chuck.

Thanks Chuck – your efforts are much appreciated

    Tim

  2. Enjoy the vacation, I’ll be ecstatic to get the first episode whenever it comes out. And please keep appearing on other podcasts when you can and making them listenable!

  3. somewhere in greece says:

I am horrified by your timetable. Hang in there Chuck, you have done good so far and this too shall pass

  4. Jesus Christ, man! I’ve enjoyed your output from Irreligiosophy and wait expectantly for what more is to come. I’ve been looking forward to what new things you’ll be contributing and other laughs in store. I don’t want to put you through any more stress than is already on you, so enjoy you’re vacation.
    Keep at it, Chuck.

  5. Take your time, Chuck. I, at least, am happy to wait for you to have enough time. Producing a free podcast isn’t very high on the list of priorities for someone with a family to support

  6. i just want to say thanks for all the high quality free stuff you’ve given us. i hope that this shitty sounding situation is not damaging your family life and will pass quickly far more than i desire you make us anonymous internet folk new stuff. good luck to you, chuck.

  7. Chuck, your timing is suspicious. The American Bible Challenge is going to start up on the Game Show Network this month… are you trying to get on the show to make some extra money?

  8. (The timing of the “vacation”)

  9. Discord.agent says:

I’ll pray for you, Chuck. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you,
    and give you peace.

  10. Just wanted to remind you that this exists: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6113487/1/Superman_In_Custody in case you need something stupid to make fun of for your new podcast. Also Khaaaaaaaan!

  11. Meringue says:

Just get some sleep man. Like, 30 days worth of sleep.

  12. Look, Chuck….We love ya and we miss ya! Try this: Set a date, let’s say 3 months or 6 months out for the start date….you can move it forward or backward….this will give people hope. Instead of that stupid bullshit in the bible that says Jesus is coming back any day now. I think that if Jesus was living now he’d set a date. People would be emailing him and driving him crazy. “All right,” he say, “I’m coming back on December 12, 2012!” Maybe that would be a good launch date for Unapologetic!

And Chuck, fuck you for all the past episodes…I’m listening to them again!

  13. YetAnotherAtheist says:

I won’t pray for you, Chuck. But then, I have never prayed in my entire life.

What I would like to do for you, however, is send you a bit of money I have lying around in my PayPal account, just as a way of saying thank you for Irreligiosophy. I came across the podcast a few months ago, and I have gotten all the way to episode 83 (Proposition 8). If you would be ok with me doing this, just respond in email. (And if there is a “donate” button somewhere that I missed, my apologies in advance for being a dumbass.)

I have, as long as I can remember, had a difficulty with logical contradictions, and religions are full of ’em. I know I went to Sunday school when I was really young, but I can’t remember a thing from that long ago. What I do remember was at a relatively early age (10?) managing to convince my parents to just let me stay home, I think with my older brother. We watched (the original) Star Trek, which was on every Sunday morning at 10 am. (Yes, I am… middle aged).

Just today, for the first time ever, I have read from the bible. Sorry, The Bible. I can’t believe anyone can hold up this book as evidence of anything useful. It takes almost no time at all to find contradictions and just plain weird shit. I mean – and I feel free to swear quite openly here given the nature of the podcast – what the fuck? How could any sane individual actually read this shit and believe anything in it? The level of cognitive dissonance required I would think should have made people’s heads explode. What is with all these people living for hundreds of years – do Christians believe that to be true? Seriously? Why then and not now? Genesis 19 – wtf? Just how drunk was Lot anyway? God is apparently perfectly ok with rape and incest. Genesis 22 (“Abraham tested”) – as you would say, God is a dick! I’m, what, 20 pages in, and I’ve already come across too much stupidity to even describe it. The flood story is just absolutely ludicrous.

I can’t do justice to mocking it the way Eddie Izzard can:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF1p4qRkTZ8

    … two ducks…
“What is the big problem? We normally swim here, … we’re going to swim up here.”

I must say, I have it easy compared to someone living in a religious society. It’s perfectly normal for religion to never come up as a topic here. But in Utah? I have a lot of respect for what you went through to “deconvert”.

So, again, thank you for Irreligiosophy. Even though you clearly lied about how many fans you have. 🙂

By the way, if there WAS an omnipotent, benevolent God, you wouldn’t have that schedule.

  15. I appreciate everyone’s patience. Just keeping my head down and moving forward right now.

Tort: I have the site bookmarked.

YetAnotherAtheist: Thanks for the donation offer — hang onto the funds until Unapologetics goes live. Then you can be the first to donate!

  16. But seriously when will the new podcast be posted?

    I assume next Monday night.

    /sarcasm

  17. Moewicus says:

Where’s mah podcast? Mah podcast is late! Wahh!

    But seriously, I can’t wait.

  18. agentsarahjane says:

Glad to hear from ya, we will be in anticipation. 🙂 In the meanwhile, get plenty of rest!

  19. Primum Movens says:

There should be a Kickstarter for Unapolagetics. =P The only problem is figuring out what to put as rewards…

  20. Take care of your business, family well being comes first. We’ll all be stoked to have the podcasts to consume whenever they come out. 🙂

  21. Herb (12th Apostle) says:

I’m still not reading these posts.

  22. Mark Torrender says:

Totally understand. Take ur time, you are worth waiting for man. 🙂

  23. Chuck,

I’m re-listening to the interview with Leighton’s brother Sean as we speak. He’s got to be an atheist by now, in case you’re looking for a new co-host. Maybe give him a call?

  24. ChurchOfLSD says:

    Chuck–
I posted here some time ago about possibly interviewing “lost boys” who were victims of warren jeffs and his FLDS cult. In addition to that, I’d like to hear more stuff specific to FLDS and the differences between mainstream mormonism. Also, personal insights about living inside FLDS. Another thing I’d really like to learn more about (especially with your snark) is about that forgery guy who made fake documents and duped the LDS church for years! Something about a white salamander too? Bizarre!

Also, PLEASE do some more takedown episodes, but concentrate on the ridiculous trend that once-reputable channels like History and Discovery (and now even NatGeo) are engaging in: UFO/Ancient Aliens/Ghost Hunter BULLSHIT. And they always air these marathons during the days of fall, Xmas, spring and summer vacations when impressionable kids are home from schoo! Get ray garton on one of those program reviews! It would be hilarious!

  25. They should give you doctors in Utah a little bit of a break — I mean can’t the mormons just pray their ailments away, leaving you to just hell those nasty heathens? Selfish SOBs…

  26. *heal

    (appropriate Freudian slip….)

  27. Pretty much slept all day yesterday, back to work again today. Not as bad as I thought it would be.

An interview with the lost boys would be a great episode. I may have some connections there too. Hmm.

  28. Cunningham! says:

How about a Zelph, The White Lamanite podcast?

  29. taiki D.Irr says:

    Almighty Chuck!

Just keep doing Church of Awesome whenever you can fit it into your schedule. We know what hardships you’ve had over the last year. Or I do at least, I don’t know about these uncaring jackals. Get to Unapologetics whenever you can.

  30. Lucy Harris says:

Having lots of freed up podcast time, here are a couple skeptic podcasts that I want to plug for the meantime.

    1. Oh No, Ross and Carrie.
Especially the one where they get baptized as Mormons. The Raelian one too. They investigate woo practices and report back.

    2. The Ardent Atheist.
No deep research or anything, just rude comedians talking about atheism and stuff.

  31. I’ll second ONRAC. Fun show.

Chuck… good luck. You’re voice is missed, but man, your schedule saddens me. Hope you have a good vacation.

  32. Take your time, Chuck.

We understand the unenviable position you are in, and, perhaps more encouraging, we know whatever you have brewing will be well worth the wait.

  33. Leela the blessed says:

    Jebus, they work you hard.
Definately take some whanau time, we’ll wait as long as it takes.
    Look after yourself!

  34. I think we should take turns keeping Chucks wife company while he’s working so much so he won’t have to spend what little free time he has with her and can work more on pod-casting. I volunteer to take the first shift.

  35. Have you heard of The Urantia Book? Would love to see a podcast on that sometime. Hang in there and we’ll be waiting for ya!
