88: The Nature of Existence

In this episode we interview Roger Nygard, director of the newly-released-on-DVD documentary, “The Nature of Existence.” Roger traveled all over the world in search of answers to such questions as why we exist, what do we do about it, is there a God, is there a Heaven or Hell, why we masturbate, what about gay people, and most importantly, why is Orson Scott Card such a humongous douchebag? We also discuss one of Roger’s previous efforts, Trekkies, because Leighton is such a huge Star Trek nerd.

87: Evidence 4 Faith Debate

[irrelig]Well, it is finished. We have given up the ghost. Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. As promised, we appeared on the Evidence 4 Faith live radio broadcast to debate the two hosts of the show, and they have convinced us of the truth of Christianity. Because of this, Leighton is scheduled to be burned at the stake next Tuesday.

Listen to all the carnage!

83: Proposition 8

[irrelig]The long-requested, long-withheld episode on Proposition 8 has finally arrived. We talk briefly about the history of California marriage law, and the seesawing legislation, voter initiatives, and court judgments revolving around gay marriage dating back to the 1970s. We discuss the (LDS-funded) campaign materials and commercials in favor of Proposition 8, which represent arguments made to the voters, and the complete rejection of those arguments in favor of totally different post-hoc arguments made by (LDS-funded) attorneys to the judge. Finally, we talk about the judge’s rejection of all of those arguments, pre- and post-hoc, to strike down Prop 8.

Also, zookeepers put the gay penguins’ gayness to the test.

80: Nathan Phelps

[irrelig]In this podcast, we discuss Fred Phelps and the infamous Westboro Baptist Church with estranged son Nathan Phelps. We discuss details of Westboro Baptist theology and practices, how Nathan managed to get the hell out of Dodge, and how he dealt with the aftermath of his upbringing. It’s a rare, fascinating, and deeply personal glimpse into one of the most notorious cults of our time.

79: Baptism For the Dead

[irrelig]For this episode, we cover the strange LDS practice of baptizing corpses just in case they change their mind and want to become Mormons in the afterlife. We cover the roots of the practice, why it’s done and what scriptural justification Mormons give for it, and the various controversies surrounding it. Also, we actually brought on a listener named Jessica to share her creepy experiences as a young Mormon dragged into the Temple to be baptized for two or three dead people by proxy.

Plus, more Skunk Dicks than you can shake a skunk at in episode 79.

76: Religious Podcast Takedown II

[irrelig]Yeah, I know we promised an episode on the Mormon involvement in Proposition 8, but we lied. In this episode, Leighton finds some religious podcasts and takes them apart while I sit back in a state of thorough confusion.

Also, some Skunk Dicks and a really bizarre episode in the ongoing Allred saga. It’s all in episode 76.
