Leighton sucks

[chuck]I’ve been trying to get in touch with Leighton to record this week’s podcast, but apparently he’s at a Wiccan winter solstice party living it up. That’s dedication for you!

We’ll get to it tomorrow. In other news, the E4F guys recently posted a “Debate Analysis,” which is apparently an hour-long analysis over what amounted to something like 15 minutes of debate. Interesting that they’d be “analyzing” a debate without the opposing side present to rebut their claims. I wonder what the point of that could be? Shouldn’t the debate stand or fall on its own merits?

I’m beginning to wonder if this kind of thing isn’t standard operating procedure for Christians: change the terms of the debate at the last minute, get beat anyway, then show up alone the next week and spin doctor like crazy.

88: The Nature of Existence

In this episode we interview Roger Nygard, director of the newly-released-on-DVD documentary, “The Nature of Existence.” Roger traveled all over the world in search of answers to such questions as why we exist, what do we do about it, is there a God, is there a Heaven or Hell, why we masturbate, what about gay people, and most importantly, why is Orson Scott Card such a humongous douchebag? We also discuss one of Roger’s previous efforts, Trekkies, because Leighton is such a huge Star Trek nerd.

87: Evidence 4 Faith Debate

[irrelig]Well, it is finished. We have given up the ghost. Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. As promised, we appeared on the Evidence 4 Faith live radio broadcast to debate the two hosts of the show, and they have convinced us of the truth of Christianity. Because of this, Leighton is scheduled to be burned at the stake next Tuesday.

Listen to all the carnage!

86: The Mitzvah

[irrelig]I’m going to go ahead and apologize for this one right now. I made the mistake of letting Leighton present his “research” first, and he ended up taking the entire podcast (probably out of revenge for me doing the same thing to him every chance I get). The result is, well, let’s just say it’s quintessentially Leighton.

May Yahweh help us all.

85: Abby & the Judaic Nation

[irrelig]This time around, we’ve got Abby to talk about growing up Jewish, a little Jewish history, the four current flavors of Judaism, her bat mizvah, and basically all things Jewish. It’s a typical wide-ranging discussion about the Mother of All Monotheisms, with a little Leighton thrown in for good measure.

84: Haunting in Connecticut

[irrelig]So we spend this episode discussing the truth behind the events of 1987 that “occurred” in an out of the way former funeral home in Connecticut to a down on their luck family trying to help their cancer/demon-infested emo son. Turns out those events were even lamer than the movie they spawned.

Also, in the spirit of Halloween 3 weeks ago, we have some Official Irreligiosophy Ouija Boards to share, meticulously drawn by listener Clifford, aka tiktaaliks_deckchair. Here’s a preview:

83: Proposition 8

[irrelig]The long-requested, long-withheld episode on Proposition 8 has finally arrived. We talk briefly about the history of California marriage law, and the seesawing legislation, voter initiatives, and court judgments revolving around gay marriage dating back to the 1970s. We discuss the (LDS-funded) campaign materials and commercials in favor of Proposition 8, which represent arguments made to the voters, and the complete rejection of those arguments in favor of totally different post-hoc arguments made by (LDS-funded) attorneys to the judge. Finally, we talk about the judge’s rejection of all of those arguments, pre- and post-hoc, to strike down Prop 8.

Also, zookeepers put the gay penguins’ gayness to the test.

82: LDS Political Primer

[irrelig]The dark times are over, the drought has receded, Irreligiosophy has finally returned from the clouds like one unto a son of man. In preparation for the One True Podcast on Proposition 8, we briefly highlight several past episodes of LDS political involvement, beginning with early clashes between the members of the LDS church and their neighbors, through the polygamy fiasco that almost destroyed it, and wind up with a newly emboldened church that nearly single-handedly defeats the ERA and Hawaii’s recent battle for gay marriage rights.

But go easy on our servers. It’s been a while.

New Podcast Coming

[chuck]I’ve spoken with Leighton and if we can finish off the very important things that remain on our to-do list (I’ve always wanted to watch every episode of Scooby-Doo in one sitting), we’re going to record a new podcast on Monday. So it should be edited and uploaded on Tuesday. We were going to take the rest of the year off because our extended absence was pissing off so many people, but then a couple of people recommended we take the year off. Realizing it was impossible to piss everyone off, we surrendered. So, new podcast coming.

Now we just have to decide if we’re going to do the Prop 8 podcast or delay it yet again and do the one on “Haunting in Connecticut” first. Also, good news! The guys over at Evidence 4 Faith have agreed to be interviewed/debated, so we just have to hammer out the whens and wheres.

Update

[chuck]Still no podcast yet. Yes, we’ve been busy with Halloween stuff, but this month has also been rough for other reasons. Chief among them, my wife is scheduled for surgery tomorrow. So sacrifice a goat, light a candle, and say a bunch of prayers, or just save your energy because none of that will affect the outcome.

Here are a few pictures of the haunt-in-progress to keep you occupied.
